THE MAGIC SIZE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA IMAGES (AND WHY YOUR INSTAGRAM GRID JUST CHANGED)
If your Instagram profile suddenly looks different, you're not imagining it. Instagram quietly killed the square grid in early 2025 — and if you're creating content across multiple platforms, this change affects how you plan every image you post.
Here's what happened, and how to work smarter across IG, Facebook, and LinkedIn with one simple size rule.

WHAT INSTAGRAM CHANGED
Instagram's profile grid shifted from a 1:1 square format to a 3:4 vertical rectangle. Every photo on your profile is now auto-cropped to that shape — whether you designed it that way or not.
You can't opt out. The square grid is gone for good.
The good news? Instagram added a feature that lets you manually adjust the thumbnail crop on each post, so you control what shows in the grid view. To use it: tap the three-dot icon on your post → select Adjust Preview → drag to reposition.
IS THERE A MAGIC SIZE THAT WORKS EVERYWHERE?
Almost. The closest thing to a universal image size is 1080 x 1350px — a 4:5 portrait format.
Here's why it works:
On Instagram, it fills more of the mobile screen than a square, performs well in the feed, and sits safely within the new 3:4 grid thumbnail without awkward cropping.
On Facebook, portrait images take up more real estate in the feed, which means more eyeballs before the scroll. The 4:5 format displays cleanly.
On LinkedIn, crop the same image to 1080 x 1080px (1:1 square) before posting. Square performs strongly on LinkedIn and the crop from your 4:5 master is simple — no redesign needed.
YOUR 3-SIZE SYSTEM
Master image: 1080 x 1350px (4:5) — use for Instagram feed and Facebook feed
Crop 1: 1080 x 1080px (1:1) — use for Instagram carousels and LinkedIn posts
Crop 2: 1200 x 628px (1.91:1) — use for LinkedIn article headers and Facebook link previews
THE SAFE ZONE RULE
This is the most important thing to remember: keep all text, faces, and key visuals inside the centre 1080 x 1080px area of your image. That centre square is what survives every crop, every platform, every thumbnail. Anything outside that zone risks being cut off.
Design your 4:5 master with this in mind and you'll never have to redesign from scratch again.
THE SIMPLE TAKEAWAY
Design once at 1080 x 1350px.
Keep everything important in the centre.
Save a 1:1 crop for LinkedIn and carousels.
That's it. One shoot, two crops, three platforms covered.
